Helping Veterans and Their Spouses
For those who have served our country in the armed services, benefits programs are available that help pay for costly medical care. Many veterans are unaware of these "Aid and Assistance" benefits and end up going without them. By speaking with a lawyer who knows about these programs, you and your family may be able to obtain the assistance you need and deserve.
My name is Melanie B. Bradford, and as a Scottsboro veterans benefits attorney, I am dedicated to helping veterans and spouses secure the full amount of Aid and Assistance benefits available. I understand that personal pride may cause some veterans or spouses of veterans to hesitate in asking for assistance. I am here to tell you that these programs exist to help you, and after serving our country, you deserve to receive any benefits for which you are eligible.
To schedule a confidential consultation to discuss you particular needs and concerns, call me at 256-293-4092, toll-free at 888-736-1592 or contact me online. I serve clients in Jackson County, DeKalb County and throughout northern Alabama.
What Are Aid and Assistance Benefits?
Aid and Assistance benefits are separate from veterans disability benefits. The Aid and Assistance program is designed to help veterans and their spouses pay expenses related to nursing home care, assisted living or home health care. The available benefits are:
- Up to $1,632 a month for a single veteran
- Up to $1,055 a month for a surviving spouse
- Up to $1,949 a month for a married couple if one spouse is a veteran
- Up to $2,540 a month for a married couple if both spouses are veterans.
Eligibility
Generally, a veteran or spouse is eligible for assistance if they need help with the activities of daily living. This may include help getting dressed, eating, bathing and a number of other daily tasks. For those over age 65, the need does not have to be a result of time in service. For those under 65, assistance is available if there is a total disability or a service-related partial disability.
In addition, there is an asset limit. The asset-related rules for obtaining Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits and Medicaid benefits are very different. Often, veterans need to use Medicaid at some point. I am very skilled and knowledgeable in the requirements for both programs, and I can help you obtain VA benefits while still remaining eligible for Medicaid.
